3 Weight Loss Mindset Shifts That Help Women in Healthcare Lose Weight Without Willpower
If you’re a nurse, physician, physician assistant, or nurse practitioner who has tried everything to lose weight, and still feels stuck, I want to offer you something different today.
Not another meal plan. Not more discipline. Not a better morning routine.
What I want to talk about is your mindset. Specifically, the thoughts that are quietly running the show underneath all your best efforts.
Because here’s what I know after years of working with high-achieving women in healthcare: you can be doing all the right actions and still not get the results you want, if the thoughts underneath those actions don’t align with where you’re trying to go.
That’s not a willpower problem. It’s a weight loss mindset problem. And it’s completely fixable.
Why Your Mindset Matters More Than Your Meal Plan
Your mindset, the way you’re thinking about something, creates an emotion in your body. That emotion drives your actions. And your actions create your results.
So if you have thoughts that don’t support your goals, they’ll quietly work against you…. causing you to skip actions that would help, take actions that work against you, or do the right things in a half-hearted way that doesn’t produce real results.
This is why weight loss for busy physicians, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, and other healthcare professionals can’t just be about eating less and moving more. You have to address what’s going on beneath the surface.
Mindset Shift #1: You Don’t Have to Eat Perfectly to Lose Weight
The thought: “I have to eat perfectly to lose weight.”
This one is everywhere. And it makes sense that your brain believes it. Maybe you’ve experienced eating “perfectly” for a while, then having one off day, and the scale doesn’t move. So your brain files it away as evidence: “see, you have to be perfect.”
But it’s not true. And more importantly, it’s not helpful โ because perfectionism creates an all-or-nothing cycle that keeps you starting over again and again.
The shift: “I can lose weight and still enjoy treats when I eat for hunger, not for all the other reasons.”
When you eat in response to true physical hunger and stop at enough, your body knows exactly what to do. It’s the eating for stress, boredom, and exhaustion โ the extra food your body didn’t actually ask for โ that gets in the way. This shift gives you permission to enjoy food while still moving toward your goals.
Mindset Shift #2: Weight Loss Doesn’t Have to Be Hard
The thought: “Weight loss is hard.”
Notice what that thought creates in your body. It’s heavy. Discouraging. It makes you want to put it off, not lean in.
Here’s the thing… a lot of the time weight loss feels hard because you’re doing it the hard way. Restriction, willpower, white-knuckling it through cravings. Or because the thought itself is making it harder than it needs to be.
The shift: “Weight loss doesn’t have to be hard. And even if it was, I’ve done hard things before and excelled.”
This one works especially well for women in healthcare, because you absolutely have done hard things. Med school. Nursing school. Night shifts. You know how to rise to a challenge, so even on the hard days, you have real evidence that you can do this.
Mindset Shift #3: The One-Word Trick That Flips Any Negative Thought
The thought: “I can’t lose the weight I want to.”
This is the most disempowering thought I see in my clients… and also the most common. It’s a closed door that shuts down action before it even starts.
The shift: “It’s possible I can lose the weight I want to.”
Just adding “it’s possible” completely changes the energy of the thought. You’re not forcing yourself to believe something you don’t yet believe. You’re simply cracking the door open. And when I ask my clients how true that feels, really feels, almost everyone says: pretty darn true.
You can use this with almost any negative thought. Take your “I can’t” and put “it’s possible” in front of it. It works because it’s believable โ and believable thoughts create real emotion, which creates real action, which creates real results.
Why These Shifts Are Hard to Do Alone
These shifts sound simple. And they are… once you can see the thought clearly. But the thoughts keeping you stuck are often the ones you can’t see, because you’re living inside them. They feel like facts, not thoughts.
That’s where working with a weight loss coach makes all the difference. A coach sees the thought from the outside, names it, and helps you shift it in a way that actually sticks, not just intellectually, but in how you feel and what you do.
This is exactly what we do together inside Lighter, my 1:1 coaching program for women in healthcare.
