Why Don’t I Have Discipline With Food?
Hey there, welcome to the Eating Habits for Life podcast.
If you’re listening today, chances are you’ve been thinking a lot about your eating habits, maybe even weight loss, and you’re ready to do something different. You’re not just telling yourself “I need to change” for the hundredth time. You’re here because you want to take action and you’re looking for someone to tell you what the next step is that makes sense.
And that’s exactly what I’m going to help you with today.
Alright, so picture this: you’ve had a long, stressful day, and you find yourself wandering into the kitchen in the evening, staring into the fridge or looking for something good inside the cabinets. You’re not even hungry, but your brain is saying, ‘Something salty… or maybe something sweet. I deserve this.’
And at the very same time, another voice is saying, ‘Ugh, why am I doing this again? I told myself today would be different.’
If you’ve ever been in that moment (and I know you have) you already know how frustrating it feels. You want to break free from habits like nighttime snacking, stress eating, or emotional eating. And you also want to lose weight. But no matter how much discipline or willpower you try to throw at it, you keep ending up in the same cycle.
In today’s episode, I’m going to share why the real reason you’re stuck has nothing to do with discipline at all. It has everything to do with the way your brain has been wired, and the mindset you carry about yourself and food.
And I’ll also tell you about a new free resource I created just for you. It’s something you haven’t likely seen before, and I’ll share more about that at the end.
What You THINK the Problem Is
You probably think you’re struggling with your eating habits due to a lack of willpower. Or maybe you tell yourself, ‘I just need more discipline. I need to stop giving in to cravings. I need to stop being so emotional about food.’
It sounds logical, right? Except, if it really was just about discipline, you would’ve solved this already.
You’re successful in every other part of your life. You show up at work, you meet deadlines, you take care of everyone else… so you definitely have discipline, right? So why does this one thing, food, feel so impossible? What’s the actual problem?
What the REAL Problem Is
The real problem is that your brain learned to use food as a solution…. for stress, for boredom, for overwhelm, even for celebration. Over time, the very primitive part of the brain, which is wired for survival, made it automatic. That’s how habits like stress eating or nighttime snacking formed.
But then there’s a second layer… the mindset piece. Thoughts like:
- ‘Why can’t I just get it together?’
- ‘I should be able to handle this on my own.’
- ‘Something must be wrong with me.’
Those thoughts don’t motivate you. They just create shame and frustration. And when you feel shame and frustration? Guess what your brain wants to do to feel better… yep, eat.
So it’s not that you’re broken or lacking willpower. It’s that your brain has been wired in one direction… and your mindset keeps reinforcing it.
What You THINK the Solution Is
You might think the solution is the perfect meal plan, or a strict food tracker, more willpower, or just not buying the chips or cookies. And maybe you’ve tried those. But they don’t stick, do they?
You can follow a plan for a while, but life happens… a stressful week at work, your kids get sick, or you’re just plain exhausted, and the old habits creep back in.
What the REAL Solution Is (Plus, the 7-Step Process)
The real solution is to change both the wiring and the way you think.
How we do that is with these main skills:
- Awareness of what your body actually needs (food or something else), what you’re feeling and thinking.
- Eating when hungry, stopping at enough
- Managing thoughts/mindset (this means before you eat, while you’re eating, and after you’re eating, to then influence your feelings and actions)
- Managing emotions, so you’re not turning to food (this also includes managing cravings, because cravings are emotions too)
- Make small, doable changes rather than extreme changes that are impossible to maintain
- Planning ahead so you follow through and can easily overcome obstacles
- Celebrate ALL wins, no matter how small, to keep you motivated, so you don’t give up or sabotage
This is exactly the process I walk women through in my 1:1 coaching program, Eat with Intention. And the beautiful thing is, once you learn how to do this, it’s not about constant willpower anymore. It becomes second nature. You have new habits and a new mindset about food, eating, your body, and yourself. You eat differently because you are different.
Results You’ll Create + Impact of Those Results
When you do this, the results go far beyond weight loss. Yes, the scale finally moves, but that’s just one piece.
Imagine being able to walk past the kitchen at night without that magnetic pull. Imagine having a stressful day and realizing food doesn’t even cross your mind. You naturally manage your stress in ways you’d much prefer like maybe going for a walk, doing some gentle stretching or taking some deep breaths and reminding yourself that you can handle anything.
Imagine actually trusting yourself around food again and being able to go to a party or work event and there are spreads of food, but you know you’ll be able to enjoy some without feeling overly full and guilty after.
The impact goes even deeper: you feel lighter mentally, not just physically. You stop spending so much energy thinking about food, what you should or shouldn’t eat, or beating yourself up afterward. And that means you have more energy to show up at work, with your family, and in your own life. More ability to be present in every moment, because thoughts about food and your body aren’t plaguing you.
You finally feel at peace. You finally feel like you don’t have to worry about food anymore. You can focus on the other things in life that you much prefer to focus on. Maybe it’s family, friends, hobbies, a new career goal. You have the brain space to do whatever you want to do and your confidence has skyrocketed, because you feel so proud that you’ve finally gotten food under control.
