Can I Feel Normal Around Food?
Hey there, welcome to the Eating Habits for Life podcast.
Have you ever looked around at other people and wondered, “how are they so normal around food? Why do I feel so broken, obsessed, or out of control?”
If you’ve asked yourself this question, you’re not alone. And more importantly, it’s not because you lack willpower or discipline. There’s a more accurate reason your relationship with food feels hard.
But even though it feels hard right now or it’s always felt hard, you can still feel normal around food.
In this episode, I’m going to talk to you about what feeling normal around food actually means. Why it feels so far away right now, which is the more accurate reason your relationship with food feels hard rather than a character flaw.
I’m going to share a key mindset shift to start feeling normal around food. And what actually changes when you do feel normal around food.
What Does “Feeling Normal Around Food” Actually Mean?
“Feeling normal around food” isn’t about eating “perfectly” or following some strict plan.
It’s about:
- Not constantly obsessing about what or when you’ll eat next
- Making decisions based on your body, not emotions or rules
- Enjoying food (yes, even treats) without spiraling or guilt
- Trusting yourself to stop when you’ve had enough
- Feeling calm before, during, and after meals
It means food isn’t a daily mental battle…it’s just food. And you can move on with your life without second-guessing every bite.
But if that feels far off right now… here’s why.
Why You Don’t Feel Normal Around Food Right Now
If you’re struggling with emotional eating, overeating, or food obsession, it’s not because you lack willpower or discipline.
Here’s what’s really happening:
- Your brain has linked certain emotions (stress, boredom, joy) with eating.
- Those “emotional eating” moments repeated enough times… became habits.
- Triggers (like restaurants, commercials, or even social pressure) now cue your brain to want food, even when you’re not hungry.
- You’ve been taught confusing, restrictive food rules by diet culture (and maybe even family growing up).
The result? You’re stuck in a loop: emotional trigger → eat → feel guilty → repeat.
And when that becomes a habit loop, it starts to feel automatic and out of your control.
But the good news? Habits are patterns… and patterns can be changed.
How to Start Feeling Normal Around Food Again
Let’s start with a simple mindset shift:
💭 “Maybe there’s nothing wrong with me. Maybe I’ve just never been taught how to feel at peace with food.”
You don’t need another diet. You don’t need to “cut out sugar.”
You just need to start shifting from reactive eating → intentional eating.
Here’s how that begins:
- Awareness: Notice when food is being used for comfort, reward, or distraction—not hunger.
- Compassion: Recognize your brain is just trying to protect you… not sabotage you.
- Belief: Start borrowing the belief that it’s possible to change.
You don’t need 100% belief right now. You just need enough to take the next step.
Just like Roger Bannister breaking the 4-minute mile. Once people saw it was possible, belief became fuel for action. And then other elite runners started breaking the 4-minute mile in a relatively short period of time after.
What Changes When You Feel Normal Around Food
Let’s talk about what’s on the other side of this.
When food no longer controls you, you get:
✅ More mental space
✅ Fewer spirals and guilt cycles
✅ Freedom to eat foods you love without overeating
✅ Real, sustainable weight loss (if that’s your goal)
✅ More confidence—in your body and your choices
✅ Relief. Peace. A new identity.
You become the kind of woman who can say:
“I enjoyed the food, I felt satisfied, and now I’m moving on.”
If you can safely take a moment to just imagine that all for yourself. Close your eyes if you’re safely able to do so.
Maybe just start with imagining yourself being free from the pain this is causing you.
Just being able to sit down and eat and it’s not a big deal. Being able to be in front of your favorite food, and deciding if you’re going to eat it or not, but not being pulled to eat it automatically.
That’s not just possible…it’s likely when you have the right tools, support, and approach.
