How to Stop Letting Past Diet Failures Define Your Future
Hi there, welcome to the Eating Habits for Life podcast. I want to talk about something you’re likely facing on our weight loss journey: the heavy burden of past failures. It’s that voice in your head that whispers, “You’ve tried this before. You failed then, so why bother now?” Do you ever have thoughts like these?
If you’ve ever felt that way, you’re not alone. We all carry stories about who we are, what we’re capable of, and what we deserve. Often, these stories shape our eating habits and weight loss journeys. For example, you might believe, “I’ve always been the one who can’t stick to anything,” or “I’ll never have a healthy relationship with food.” These thoughts aren’t just passive—they actively influence your actions.
The good news? You have the power to re-write these stories. Changing the narrative can transform how you approach your goals, helping you shed old habits and adopt new ones that align with the person you want to become.
Today, I’ll show you how to stop letting past diet failures define your future, and I’ll share a strategy to help you move forward with hope, determination, and the confidence to succeed this time.
The Weight of Past Diet Failures
Let’s start by acknowledging how past experiences shape us. When you’ve been through multiple diets—restrictive meal plans, grueling workouts, or “quick fixes” that promised big results but left you feeling worse—it’s natural to feel disheartened. These experiences create mental and emotional baggage.
But here’s the thing: Failure isn’t proof that you can’t succeed. It’s proof that you’ve been trying, and trying is the first step toward achieving anything worthwhile. Think about it—every attempt taught you something, even if it didn’t yield the results you wanted.
Reframing Failure as Feedback
Instead of labeling those attempts as failures, what if you reframed them as feedback? Every time you didn’t reach your goal, you learned something valuable. Maybe you discovered that skipping meals backfires, or that setting unrealistic goals led to burnout. These lessons are like a treasure map guiding you to what works.
Here’s an example from one of my clients. We’ll call her Stephanie for confidentiality purposes. Stephanie had tried dieting before, had lost a significant amount of weight, but gained it back and felt badly about herself that she gained it back.
Together, we looked back and identified patterns: She thrived on cooking healthier meals when she had time, but felt like time was limited and also struggled with stress eating after work, especially if she was feeling hungry…she had a habit of stopping for fast food on the way home.
That insight became her stepping stone, and we looked at where we could create time in her schedule to do some batch cooking that was enjoyable to her, so she didn’t have to stress about time constraints. We also developed strategies specific to her for decreasing stress, decreasing that overly hungry feeling on way home from work, and she was able to completely break that stopping for fast food habit.one and into growth. Fear doesn’t mean you shouldn’t move forward; it means you’re about to do something worth doing.
The Power of Writing a New Story
One of the most transformative things you can do is to rewrite your story and this is absolute key for how to not let past diet failures define your future. Start by asking yourself: What kind of story am I telling about my weight loss journey? If your story revolves around failure and defeat, you’re reinforcing a narrative that holds you back.
So, to re-write your story, you first need to uncover the one you’re telling yourself.
Take a moment to ask:
- What do I believe about my ability to lose weight or maintain healthy habits?
- How do I describe myself when it comes to food and exercise?
- Are there patterns or phrases I repeat, like “I’m bad at this” or “I always give up”?
Sometimes, these stories stem from past experiences. Maybe you tried diets that didn’t work, and those “failures” reinforced the belief that change is impossible. Or perhaps someone made a comment years ago that stuck with you, shaping how you see yourself today.
But you’re the author of this story. You get to decide how it unfolds.
Let’s take the old story of “Nothing has worked for me.” Imagine writing a new chapter that begins with, “This time, I’m focusing on what works for me. I’m taking small, consistent steps and giving myself grace along the way.”
Or let’s take the story, “I always fail at trying to change my eating habits.” What if you changed it to, “I’ve learned that restrictive diets don’t work for me, and now I’m finding an approach that’s sustainable”?
This small shift turns a perceived failure into an opportunity for self-awareness and growth. It’s not just about positivity—it’s about truthfully aligning your narrative with your potential.
A Future-Focused Visualization Exercise
Close your eyes for a moment. Imagine it’s six months from now, and you’ve achieved your goals. You feel energized, confident, and proud of the habits you’ve built. Picture how your mornings feel, what you wear, how you move through your day.
You can also ask the questions:
- How do you describe yourself?
- What habits have you developed?
- How do you feel about food, your body, and your overall well-being?
Now, reflect on what got you there. Was it strict rules? Probably not. It was likely the small, sustainable changes you committed to every day. This is the version of you that’s possible—if you stop letting the past dictate your future.
How Coaching Can Help Rewrite Your Story
Re-writing your story can be challenging to do alone, especially when the old narrative feels deeply ingrained. That’s where coaching comes in.
When we work together, I’ll help you identify the limiting beliefs holding you back and guide you through replacing them with empowering ones. We’ll create a personalized plan that fits your life, ensuring that your new story is actionable and achievable.
And from now until December 20th, I’m offering something special: If you book a free consultation, say yes to yourself, and commit to starting coaching by the New Year, I’ll gift you my 8-week Confidence Continuum program. This is a transition program designed to help you build confidence in maintaining your habits, setting new goals, and thriving long after coaching ends.
Closing Thoughts:
Your past is a teacher, not a predictor. Let’s use those lessons to create something extraordinary. Your story is still being written, and the next chapter can be one of success and transformation. And remember, I’m here to guide you through this process.
