Moving Past Fear and Doubt to Unlock Your Potential
Hi there, and welcome back to the Eating Habits for Life podcast.
Today’s episode is a special one because I’m going to do two things I think you’ll really enjoy. First, I’ll share a personal story that I’ve never told here before—one that might feel very familiar if you’ve ever felt stuck or doubted whether you could truly achieve the results you want.
Second, I’m going to guide you through a little exercise to help you connect with your future self, that version of you who’s already broken free from the habits and fears that hold you back. So stick with me—you won’t want to miss it.
For as long as I can remember, I’ve been a runner. In high school and college, I ran competitively, and afterward, it became something I did for joy, for fitness, and just to feel alive. But over the last couple of years, I decided to get back into running more seriously and set some big goals for myself.
At first, it was going great. But then, something shifted. I hit a plateau. No matter how much work I was putting in—actually, because I was putting in more work—my times weren’t improving. In fact, they got worse. I felt frustrated, disappointed, and honestly, a little defeated.
I kept wondering, ‘Is something wrong with me? Has my body reached its limit? Am I just wasting my time trying to get better?’
I thought about hiring a coach, but I kept talking myself out of it. I was scared. What if I spent all this time and money and still didn’t improve? What if it really was just my body and nothing could be done?
Then, out of nowhere, I found out an old friend of mine—Ramon, who was the best runner I knew—had started coaching runners. I decided to book a free consultation with him. And let me tell you, that conversation changed everything.
He immediately pinpointed the issue. It wasn’t what I thought. It wasn’t that my body was broken or limited—it was my approach. I was overworking myself in ways that weren’t effective. We started working together, and within weeks, I felt better. Not just physically, but emotionally too.
Here’s the kicker: the training he gave me is easier than what I’d been doing on my own, but it’s also smarter, more focused, and designed for my body and goals.
I realized that if I hadn’t taken that step to talk to him, I would’ve kept grinding away, doing the same thing, getting the same results, and eventually wearing myself down to the point where I might have given up completely or gotten injured.
Now, I feel confident, encouraged, and excited about my goals again.
I also want to share a quick success story that highlights exactly what I’m talking about—moving past fear and doubt to unlock your potential.
One of my clients had struggled for years with a habit she couldn’t seem to break. Every day after work, she’d come home and reach for a snack—graham crackers or a bag of chocolate chips—no matter how hard she tried to stop.
She felt like she had tried everything and just couldn’t get control over her eating, but specifically these two snacks. She even felt like there was something weird or wrong about her that it had to be one of those two things.
Then, one day, she came across a post I shared on Instagram. After reading it, she immediately felt like I knew exactly what her problem was. So, she booked a consultation with me, and in that conversation, we dug into the deeper issue: a habit that had become automatic for her, but one that we could break together.
Fast forward just six weeks later, and that habit was completely gone. She was able to reclaim control over her eating and, most importantly, felt empowered to make lasting changes. This is the exact transformation that’s possible when you stop letting fear or doubt hold you back from taking action.
You don’t have to keep doing the same thing over and over, feeling like you’ll never break the cycle. Change is possible. All it takes is the courage to take that first step.
Does any part of either of those stories resonate with you? Have you ever felt like you’re working so hard, but the results just aren’t coming? Maybe you’re thinking, ‘Something must be wrong with me,’ or ‘This is just how I am—stuck in this cycle forever.’
Re-framing Fear and Doubt
First, let’s address those fears. If you’ve ever thought, I can’t do this, or What if I fail?—know this:
What those fears DON’T mean:
- They don’t mean you’re incapable.
- They don’t mean something is fundamentally wrong with you.
- They don’t mean your goals are impossible.
What those fears DO mean:
- You care deeply about improving your life.
- You’re standing on the edge of change, and your brain is signaling that something important is at stake.
- You’re human, and your brain is trying to protect you from the discomfort of the unknown.
Fear isn’t a stop sign. It’s a signal. A signal that you’re stepping outside your comfort zone and into growth. Fear doesn’t mean you shouldn’t move forward; it means you’re about to do something worth doing.
Here’s how you shift your mindset:
- Acknowledge the fear without judgment.
- Reframe it as excitement. Think, ‘This fear means I care, and I’m ready for something new.’
- Focus on possibility. Ask yourself, ‘What’s the best that could happen if I go for it?’
Visualization Exercise
Now, let’s take a moment to connect with that possibility. I want to guide you through a quick exercise. If you’re driving or doing something active, feel free to come back to this part later.
Close your eyes if you can. Take a deep breath in through your nose… and let it out slowly.
Picture your future self, six months from now. Imagine waking up one morning and realizing that the habits you once struggled with—the ones that drained your energy and confidence—are no longer an issue.
You feel light, energized, and at peace with your choices. You head into your day with clarity, knowing that food doesn’t control you anymore. You enjoy meals with ease, without guilt or overthinking.
Picture how you look. Notice how you hold yourself with confidence. Imagine what it feels like to achieve the goals you set for yourself—to have control over your eating, your health, and your life.
Now zoom out and think about the ripple effect. How does this version of you show up in your relationships? At work? For your family?
Take another deep breath, and know this: this version of you isn’t a dream. It’s a decision.
When you’re ready, open your eyes and hold on to that feeling.
The thing I want you to take away from this exercise is that your future self is possible. But sometimes, you need help getting there. Just like I needed Ramon to pinpoint what was holding me back, you might need someone to help you see what’s standing in your way and guide you through a better approach.
You don’t have to keep spinning your wheels, trying harder and harder without results. There’s a smarter, easier way forward.
