Why Summer is the Perfect Time to Start Losing Weight

Hi there, welcome to the Eating Habits for Life podcast!

Today, you and I are going to chat about why summer is the perfect time to start losing weight. I’ll also give you practical tips to start now. AND I’m excited to then tell you about my special free gift to you if you agree that summer IS the perfect time to start losing weight.

But even more so to start getting freedom from the eating habits you’re not proud of, the ones you feel like are affecting your emotional and physical health negatively, and the ones that are causing your weight struggles.

So, let’s dive in.

When thinking about changing your eating habits and losing weight, have you had the thought, “I’ll get serious about it when things calm down.” Or maybe “I’ll start in January.” Or “I just need to try it on my own again.”

Likely you’ve had one or more of these thoughts, or at least similar thoughts. And it’s expected that you would because our human brains LOVE to delay things by giving reasons why we should wait.

That’s because our human brains are designed to keep us doing the same thing we’ve always done.

Our brains think they’re keeping us safe by doing that. But, it’s actually just delaying your dreams.

Delaying the healthy body and life you really want. So as amazing as our brains are, not everything they present to us is true, nor is it relevant or truly beneficial.

And so, if you find yourself identifying with any of these thoughts or find yourself either NOT pursuing your eating habits or weight loss goals or maybe only half-heartedly pursuing them this season, this episode is for you.

So today, we’re diving into why summer is the perfect time to start your weight loss journey. I know it might seem counterintuitive with all the BBQs, vacations, and kids out of school, but stick with me because I’m going to show you how starting now can set you up for lasting success.

Summer can definitely be a whirlwind. It seems to go by in a blink. I was just telling Paul that it’s almost shocking that it’s the end of July already. Here in Rhode Island, our seasons are basically winter for like 10 months and summer for 2 months. That’s what it feels like.

But no matter where you’re listening from, I’m guessing that you feel summer seems to fly by, partly with all the fun stuff going on. So of course, with all the vacations, family gatherings, enjoying outdoor dining, it might feel like an odd time to focus on weight loss.

But here’s the thing: summer is a great opportunity to create lasting change. The key is to embrace the season’s unique aspects rather than seeing them as obstacles. If you can navigate these busy times while making positive changes, you’ll build habits that stick long after summer ends.

And here’s the other thing, if you want to lose weight and keep it off, you need to do so in ALL the seasons. You don’t want to be losing weight, gaining it back, losing it again, gaining it back, right?

Let’s break down why beginning your weight loss journey in summer can be incredibly advantageous.

First, by starting now, you’re creating momentum that will carry you into the fall and beyond. Which, may I point out, aren’t any LESS busy than summer. In fact, these times can be busier, more stressful.

Summer’s relaxed atmosphere tends to be less stressful than the holiday season, which means you can focus on making steady, manageable changes without the added pressure.

Plus, the warmer weather often encourages more outdoor activities, which can naturally boost your mood and motivation and certainly enhance your weight loss efforts. It can be a very fun time to be outside doing an activity to get the heart rate going.

Whether it’s a daily swim, a weekend hike, or just evening strolls, you’ll be integrating more physical activity into your routine.

Here are a few practical tips to help you get started:

#1 Start with Small Changes: Start by incorporating simple adjustments into your daily routine. Is there one snack you can easily eliminate that you’re not actually hungry for? Or maybe you can eat the vegetables and protein on your dinner plate first, drink some water, then see if you’re still even hungry for whatever else is on your plate.

Or commit to a 10-minute walk each day and make it easy for yourself by deciding ahead of time, when you’ll get that walk in, plus, keeping your sneakers in plain sight to serve as a reminder. Maybe even set an alert on your phone.

You can also make a small change by serving yourself a few bites less of food or leave a few bites on your plate and throw them out immediately, so they aren’t sitting there tempting you, even though you’re no longer hungry.

These small steps are easier to start with and stay consistent with. And they may seem like nothing, but they will build the foundation for more significant changes.

#2 Hydrate More: Make hydration a priority. You’re going to want to naturally do this in the summer anyway, so it’s an excellent time to start a really healthy hydration habit AND drinking adequate water helps you lose weight! If you haven’t listened to my podcast episode on Summer Hydration Habits for Weight Loss and Health from last week, check it out after this one.

To help you develop hydration habits, carry a water bottle with you everywhere you go. If you’re working at a desk all day long, make sure it’s right in front of you for easy access and in your line of sight, so you can see it and be reminded to take some sips.

#3 Decrease Stress:

Stress leads to elevated cortisol, which does not help with weight loss. Plus, stress can easily lead to stress eating, which means extra food you didn’t need. Which certainly doesn’t help with your weight loss journey.

So, because summer tends to be a little more fun and there is more daylight, allow yourself some more time in nature, set aside 10 minutes to sit in stillness, read a book, meditate, or do yoga. Listen to some relaxing music, or the birdsong in your backyard or while on a walk.

These things are all healthy habits that aid in your overall physical and emotional health and can assist with weight loss.

To share a real-life example…

One of my clients who started working with me last summer, decided not to wait and she was so glad she didn’t. Here’s the background.

She has a demanding career, 2 children, 2 dogs, is in a romantic relationship, has a summer sport which she commits a lot of time to, has lots of friends who she gets together with fairly frequently, and had family visiting multiple times in the summer from out of state.

So definitely busy, right? Well, one of her reasons for starting in summer was that she wanted to be well-equipped for when the holiday season came up in late fall and early winter. Plus, she set a goal for herself to lose a certain amount of weight that was a very reasonable number, by the end of the year.

While working together, we started with small changes that she could easily follow through on. I taught her tools and skills she started applying right away and got better and better at them.

So then by the time the holidays came, she already had new, healthy habits, plus felt so much more comfortable with those tools and skills, felt like she was managing urges and just all different emotions better.

So, she felt much more equipped for that stressful holiday season and instead of fearing the holiday weight gain, she went into it with confidence and continued losing weight.

And while everyone else around her was scrambling to lose weight in January, February, March, she was enjoying the freedom from her prior eating habits that she wasn’t proud of and enjoying her body. So fun.

So, I ask you, why wait?

Take advantage of the summer and start making changes that will last you for life. If you haven’t tried on your own yet and aren’t ready for help yet, then start with those small changes I gave you.

If you’ve tried or are ready for help and tired of feeling frustrated or feeling like you’re failing, then I’m here to help you.
